4 Ways to Celebrate National Pet Day [Plus a Giveaway!]

It’s National Pet Day today—one of our favorite holidays! Today marks the day that we as a country appreciate all pets, from dogs to cats, rabbits to horses. Although let’s be honest, pretty much every day around Live the Pet Life is a day where we show appreciation for our pets.

But if you’re in the mood to celebrate today—and we hope you are—here are four great ways to have fun on National Pet Day:

Groom Your Pet

It doesn’t need to be a full-on grooming from head to toe; even just a simple brushing will make your pet feel special. Not only will it make your pet look nicer by distributing their fur’s natural oils, but it will also help their mental state and will help you find issues like fleas, ticks and dry skin patches. We always recommend a slicker brush, which is rubber-based and has closely-spaced tines to remove old undercoat effectively. And if you need a few tips on grooming your pet, check out this article.

Take Your Dog for an Extra-Long Walk

We’ve discussed the health benefits of walking before, but they’re worth repeating. Walking can provide both physical and mental health benefits for you and your dog, so we obviously recommend a good walk every day to get the blood and oxygen flowing. But since it’s National Pet Day, consider a longer walk outside. Maybe chart a new route so your dog can sniff new scents, or even take a hike away from civilization (just be sure to follow precautions before hiking with your dog).

Treat Your Pet!

In moderation, of course. Our vets recommend only 5 percent of your pet’s daily diet come from treats. We also always opt for natural when we can; there’s comfort in knowing what goes into our pets’ treats. But if there’s any day to give your pets treats, it’s National Pet Day!

Post Photos of Your Pet to Social Media

Okay, this one isn’t strictly going to benefit your pet (unless your pet is Doug the Pug). But sharing your pet photos with your friends and family is a great way to show how much your pet matters to you. Plus, the internet can always use more cat and dog photos.

So to commemorate our first National Pet Day here on the blog, we’d actually like to encourage you to share your pet photos with us, for the chance to win an awesome pet care products pack from OUT! Pet Care, Simple Solution, Bags on Board and Vet’s Best. Here’s how it works:
