Dressing Up Your Pet for Halloween

Profile of senior beagle dog wearing Halloween pumpkin costume

We can’t quite remember when it started, but dressing up pets for Halloween has become HUGE! According to a recent survey, 16 percent of people celebrating Halloween this year will put their pets in costumes. The most popular? Pumpkin, hot dog, lion, pirate, bumblebee, the devil, Batman, ghost, witch and Star Wars characters. If you’re not sure how to dress up your pet for Halloween, we have some spooktacular suggestions for you:

Make your own costume

HGTV has a fang-tastic collection of DIY Halloween costumes, including this adorable ladybug one for dogs and a saucy chef’s hat for cats.

Buy a Ready-Made Costume

If you don’t have time to make a costume, you’ll find a wide variety of boo-tiful ready-made ones at local stores. Try Petco, PetSmart, Target and Walmart.

Search Online

You’ll find lots more creative costume ideas, ranging from outrageous to ghoulish, online. These are a few of our more-cute-than-scary favorites:

Garden gnome

Cop and jailbird

A few words of caution

Not all pets will be happy if you dress them up! Kitties especially can become scaredy cats if you try to force them into a costume. You don’t have to skip dressing them up though. Keep it simple with a Halloween accessory, such as a witch’s hat, that won’t frighten your pet. And we’re careful with the outfits we put on our pets and avoid ones with dangling bits that can choke or strangle them. You can find more Halloween pet safety tips at PetMD.

We wish you and your pets a very happy Howloween!
